Most Chinese characters are made of smaller meaning-pieces called radicals. Once you know that 氵 means water, you can guess that 河, 海, 湖, 泡, and 汁 all have something to do with water. Recognizing these pieces is the single biggest unlock for reading — instead of memorizing each character whole, you start seeing through them.
